I came across an article in Harvard Business Review that left me thinking a lot about how customer referrals can have a much more powerful effect than we usually imagine. We know that a good recommendation can do wonders for attracting new customers, but what this study suggests goes much further.
Referrals are contagious*
The article mentions a phenomenon they call “reference contagion”. The idea is quite simple: customers who come through a referral not only buy more, but are much more likely to refer others. In fact, they refer 30% to 57% more new customers than those who arrived by other methods. Why? Because when a person recommends something they like to you, they're usually surrounded by other people who might also enjoy it. This is what they call “homophily” in the study: we surround ourselves with people who look like us.
In addition, referred clients tend to perceive that recommending is socially accepted. Have you noticed how sometimes we feel a little embarrassed to recommend something out of fear that it might not be what our friend or colleague expected? That boils down when you were referred yourself, because you feel like you're already part of a positive chain.
A little reminder can do wonders↑
One of the most interesting parts of the study is how a simple reminder can make a big difference. In one experiment, they sent referred customers a notification reminding them that they themselves came for a referral. The result: 21% more successful referrals. Sometimes, small touches of attention activate what we already know and we only need a small push to act.
